Around Quito

Hail and rain pounded my beloved Quito in an electrical storm this last month... hail that mercilessly attacked for at least 45 minutes with torrential rains flooding the north side... along Shyris Avenue. Some became stranded and were rescued. Even Quicentro - from the parking lot all the way to inside the first floor - turned into a temporary river.

Plaza de Toros didn't escape. People in restaurants climbed the tables to stay dry.

Some of the sewer and water drainage collapsed from the force of the storm.

Usually this only happens on the south side... not that the south side wasn't slushed as well, with a landslide that killed a pedestrian and a couple of people in a vehicle. Wow!

Good Friday required rain gear, but that most holy day the rain came gentler. And in all this, the colonial area was spared the vengeance in the weather.

Seems the Prez got accused of cohorting with drug dealers, which he vehemently denies, volunteering to take a lie detector test.

Tourism in Ecuador

Voters in Ecuador brought bullfighting to a screeching halt after 500 years. The matadors are not happy campers.

Violence from an angry volcano, Tungurahua, near Banos hurled truck-size boulders more than a mile, ending April in a most spectacular way.

And, according to Tarqui Radio, the Ecuadorian government together with Civil Aviation agreed on the first "green" airport in the world on Isla Baltra. Galapagos Corporacion America will be in charge with construction scheduled to begin in June of 2011.

Entertainment

Myley Cyrus, alias Hanna Montana, launched her world tour April 29 with her grand entrance in Quito at Atahualpa Sports Stadium... Then off she went to Lima, Peru on May 1... and on to the rest of her orbit.

Quito responded warmly as is their custom.
