Around Quito

Mitad Del Mes Setiembre!

Last month I said summer is slipping away, but that's only north of the equator, not in Ecuador... land of eternal spring.

Roses grow so beautifully here because of the intense sun, and the perfect climate, they are exported all over the world to smell and enjoy... and as a novelty, to eat covered in chocolate. How about a Rose Souffle or a rose martini made with rose petals soaked in vodka for a week?

I remember eating rose petals as a child close to where I grew up. These are, of course, organic roses, where garlic is used to fight off bugs that damage the roses.

Pesticide is used only on the roses not meant to eat... guess they ran out of garlic.

Restaurants and bars from New York to Barcelona serve this delicacy from Ecuador.

New Archbishop

On Sunday, September 12, Pope Benedict XVI appointed a new archbishop to Quito... H.E. Fausto Gabriel Travez Travez, OFM. He was born in Toacaza in the diocese of Latacunga according to Ordo Fratrum Minoro.

400th Anniversary of Our Lady of Good Success

I quote from Star of the Stormy Sea, quarterly newsletter of the Apostolate of Our Lady of Good Success:

"On February 2, 2010, the four hundredth anniversary of the Church approved devotion to Our Lady of Good Success will be observed with great ceremony in Quito, Ecuador. The feast of Our Lady of Good Success falls on a recognized day of the Catholic Church: the Feast of the Purification or Candlemas Day. Why is the devotion so important for our times?"

"In the years between 1582 and 1634, The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to a cloistered sister in Quito, Ecuador, named Mother Mariana de Jesus Torres. During these 52 years... she spoke to Mother Mariana about the future times that were to come for the Catholic Church particularly in the period 'from mid-twentieth century onwards'. Our Blessed Mother described for her the grave crisis that would take place in this era within the Catholic Church and also Society in general..."

"The Rosary of the Dawn Procession occurs each year on February 2nd. However, this year was more exciting as it was the beginning of the 400th year of the devotion to Our Lady of Good Success. The church doors were opened at 4:00 a.m..."

"I would love to do it again next year, to celebrate the 400th Anniversary of the STATUE (replica for the U.S.) having been completed and blessed..."

So, there you are folks, if you want to join the Rosary of the Dawn of February 2, 2011 together with the procession. Let's do it!

Our Lady of Good Success statue is not easy to find. The only place to get one is through the nuns at the convent, and they sell out for the pilgrimage.
